What Are Wisdom Teeth? Understanding the Basics

There are many misconceptions about the third molars. Here are some facts that will help you understand what they are and why they can pose a problem.

Extra Set of Molars

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that erupt in the very back of the mouth. Most people have four extra molars, two on upper row of teeth, and two on the lower row of teeth. It's possible to have fewer of these teeth develop and emerge.

Affect Teens & Adults

For most, the third molars erupt during the teenage years or early adulthood. It's possible for a wisdom tooth to come in much later in life, but the majority of people who see their dentist about these extra molars are in their teens and early twenties.

You Don't Need Them

Wisdom teeth aren't necessary. In fact, crowding from a wisdom tooth can make it difficult to clean the very back of the mouth. A wisdom tooth that comes in crooked can painfully press against other molars and cause tooth misalignment.

Signs of Wisdom Teeth Problems Top Reasons to Have Them Removed

An impacted wisdom tooth can increase your risk of tooth decay, fractures, and even root canal infections. If you experience any of the issues listed below, it's important to speak with a dentist or oral surgeon about wisdom tooth removal.

Toothaches

An impacted wisdom tooth pressing against an existing molar can cause persistent tooth pain. This will only get worse without treatment at our Brazoria practice.

Crooked Teeth

As impacted third molar can press against the adjacent tooth, and this force can result in the rest of your teeth shifting position and becoming crooked over time.

Facial Pain

Impacted third molars can also cause persistent jaw pain. Changes in your tooth alignment could cause soreness in the the sinus area as well.

Frequent Cavities

The tight squeeze from the extra molars in the back of the mouth makes it difficult for your toothbrush or floss to remove food particles and plaque.

Swollen Gums

Pain from tooth impaction or issues with oral hygiene could result in inflammation of the gums around the back of the mouth.

Bad Breath

Oral hygiene challenges make it hard to have fresh breath. Bad breath is also a sign of cavities, gum disease, and root canal infections.

Potential Problems with Wisdom Teeth Eruption

How the wisdom teeth can grow in
The wisdom teeth may partially erupt or fail to erupt completely, increasing the risk of infection, tooth movement, and other dental problems. Even if the wisdom teeth come in straight, they can push the other teeth out of alignment.

I cannot say enough about Dr. Adam Osga and his staff. Never have I been more comfortable while having a tooth extracted. Dr. Osga explained exactly what he was going to do and what I would feel and hear. Therefore, I was totally relaxed during the procedure. There was very minimal discomfort. Before I left his office I felt more like I had just spent time with friends. Each staff member I have met I would like to take home with me. They were helpful, cheerful and very professional. Aubrey is amazing. She cleaned my teeth during a prior visit and was so thorough and gentle that I truly enjoyed the time spent there. I am so very happy to have found Dr. Osga and his staff!

I had my tooth pulled a while ago, I am so scared of dentist. Dr. Osga was exceptional, did not feel anything from the needle of the anesthesia to the pulling of the tooth, he has very light hands & his bedside manner is wonderful, his dental assistant HILDA was very supportive & very calming to my frazzled nerves. I will go have any teeth pulled at this OSGA DENTAL office anytime. I was scared for nothing because the experience was calming & easy but most of all pain free.

Diagnostics & Planning

Before the oral surgery date, we take x-rays of the teeth, gums, and jaw. We then plan out the procedure ahead of time. Proper planning means a faster and safer surgery.

Anesthesia & Sedation

During the actual oral surgery, local anesthetic is administered to prevent pain during the procedure. Sedation methods are also used to put patients in a relaxed state.

Removing the Wisdom Teeth

An incision is made in the gums to expose the wisdom tooth and its root structure. The tooth may be extracted in one piece or may need to be broken into multiple pieces.

Sealing with Sutures

Once all of the wisdom teeth are removed, the incisions along the gums are sealed using sutures. The sutures will dissolve on their own during the patient healing process.

Packing with Gauze

Finally, the extraction areas are packed with cotton gauze. The gauze applies pressure to the gum line to aid in healing and prevent excessive bleeding after surgery.

Dr. Osga is outstanding! Having seen his work i know that Brazoria is very fortunate to have him. A dentist with a personality and the ability to put you at ease. His obsession to detail and high standards put him in the top 10% of dentists in my opinion. Between the 3D images he uses for implants, the scanner he has that allow impressions for crowns without the traditional goop and the 3D printer he uses; patients are receiving a quality of care that rivals any other dental office.
